All about Gilsonite
Gilsonite has grown a lot in Iran today. Gilsonite powder is also found in the bazaar. The price of Gilsonite varies in different regions and depending on its quality. Gilsonite, which is also called mineral bitumen, is a pure and natural hydrocarbon that is found in natural bitumen mines with a melting temperature between 160 and 220 degrees Celsius. Gilsonite is actually hardened crude oil. Gilsonite dissolves in aromatic petroleum solvents and fatty solvents such as petroleum bitumen. And they are used to loosen and harden petroleum products. The high presence of nitrogen-containing compounds in Gilsonite gives it high adhesiveness. Gilsonite with its adhesion has a high resistance to oxidation.

Gilsonite is used as a performance-enhancing agent for asphalt mixtures. This material can replace or complement SBS polymers in modified asphalts by reducing the cost. Asphalts changed with Gilsonite have more stability, less deformation, less sensitivity to temperature, and more resistance to water wear than unmodified asphalts. Gilsonite is also used to make pavement sealers based on solvent and emulsion with superior appearance and Weathering properties.

The use of gilsonite in the production of asphalt mixture doubled the expected useful life of the pavement. In New South Wales, Australia, Gilsonite has been used as an additive and modifier with an amount of 0.25% by weight compared to the asphalt mixture. Studies and investigations conducted on the pavement implemented after 6, 12, and 24 months showed a significant reduction in rutting and corrugation damage compared to the previously implemented pavement in which Gilsonite was not used.
